Literary affinities within world literature

Facilitated by Hélène Leibkutsch

Eight encounters covering different places, cultures and imaginations, through shared reading and discussion, guided by Hélène Leibkutsch.

An art historian, HÉLÈNE LEIBKUTSCH moves seamlessly between languages and cultures, driven by her passion for art, literature, and music. She holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Geneva, where she studied art history, general linguistics, and English, as well as a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in cultural institution promotion from the University of Neuchâtel. With international experience in the fields of art history and the art market, Hélène Leibkutsch has pursued her career while cultivating a particular interest in literature. She served on the board of the Société de Lecture, as vice president for two terms (2008–2010; 2012–2019), and chaired the Reading Committee (2010–2021), of which she is still a member.

Over the course of eight encounters, this reading group will explore a selection of literary works that “have transcended the sphere and place of their origins,” according to Martin Bodmer’s definition of the concept of Weltliteratur, or world literature, so dear to Goethe. A literary journey through the world and across the ages, guided by the participants’ literary interests. The September session will be devoted to Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita in the new translation by André Markovicz and Françoise Morvan (Inculte-Dernière Marge, 2020). The book selected for the October session is Marguerite Yourcenar’s Memoirs of Hadrian.
