From leisurely reading to critical reading – Group 1

Facilitated by Alexandre Demidoff

Read, debate and sharpen your critical eye with Alexandre Demidoff as you explore the books set to define the literary season. A lively reading group in which personal impressions meet the views of a professional critic.

As a journalist for the Culture section of Le Temps, ALEXANDRE DEMIDOFF tirelessly attends theater performances in Switzerland and abroad. With a master’s degree in French literature from the University of Geneva and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, he stimulates the group to discover the joy of critical reading.

Participants are invited to discuss the aesthetic issues raised by seven or eight major books the automne season 2026 and spring 2027. The program will feature, the novels set to electrify the start of the new season. Each encounter will involve a lively and sometimes controversial examination of a work, enriched by a more detailed analysis of a significant passage. The goal is to acquire tools needed to fully appreciate a text and form an informed opinion. Personnal intuitions of the amateur will be compared with the insight of professional critics. The book selected for the October session is Dictionnaire du langage des fleurs by António Lobo Antunes (Éditions Bourgois, 2026).
